Woman hospitalised after shark attack at Merimbula

A woman in her 60s is in hospital after being bitten on the hip and thigh by a shark while swimming at Main Beach Merimbula on the NSW Far South Coast.

At around 7am today, Saturday 13 March, the Surf Life Saving NSW State Operations Centre was alerted by police that a woman had been injured and was being taken to hospital.

Department of Primary Industries experts are investigating and are yet to advise on the type and size of the shark involved.

Surf Lifesavers are working with the local Council to close beaches in the area for the next 24 hours, from Wallagoot Lake down to Pambula.

Surf Life Saving drones are being launched this morning to conduct surveillance of the waters off Merimbula and are working with the DPI to monitor any marine activity.
