Winter has well and truly settled in and has long been regarded as a time where Canberra quietens down for the cooler months.

A number of events have changed that perception in recent years, like the Truffle Festival, the Canberra Wine District Fireside Festival, and the City Renewal Authority’s Wintervention in the City.

Wintervention will activate the city centre and transform Civic Square into a winter wonderland for the school holidays with an open-air ice-skating rink.

City Renewal Authority CEO Malcolm Snow said Wintervention is a chance to get out and about and see what the city has to offer over winter.

“No other mainland city around the country has a winter like Canberra with enchanting frosty mornings and snow-covered mountains visible from the city centre,” he said.

“Whether you’re a skater or a spectator, Wintervention is a family-friendly event designed to embrace the Canberra chill around entertainment, activities, food, and market stalls.”

Wintervention will run to 11 July, with markets, food stalls and live performances from Stars on Ice on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

“The markets will run across two weekends, including Friday 25 to Sunday 27 June and Friday 2 to Sunday 4 July, and will welcome a range of fashion, art, craft and design stalls from local traders,” said Mr Snow.

“Daily music performances, hot drinks and food stalls are available for the school holiday crowd.

“Local foodie favourites will be joining the frosty fun and provide tasty treats and beverages, including the Tikka Stand, Neat St. Coffee, La Empanada and Big River Distilling.”

The ice rink will be open 10am-8pm Sunday-Thursday and 10am-9pm Fridays and Saturdays. For tickets, visit canberra.starsonice.com.au/tickets/.

All other events are free and attendees will need to check with in the Check In CBR app.
