Winter Solstice Nude Charity Swim attracts record numbers

The fifth annual Winter Solstice Nude Charity Swim has seen a record 245 participants take the plunge with over $38,000 raised so far for Lifeline Canberra.

The event, which marks the winter solstice and raises money for charity, was held at sunrise on Monday 21 June at Yarralumla Bay, Lake Burley Griffin.

Ben Johnston, Chairperson of the Winter Solstice Nude Charity Swim, said it was great to see so many back in the water after the Covid-affected event last year.

“After only two participants last year, to see so many bums in the water was really something,” Mr Johnston said.

With not a wisp of wind on the lake and a relatively balmy 2 degrees, the swimmers were treated to ideal conditions for this year’s swim. The swim has a symbolic significance for participants to wash away their negative energy and start the new solar year renewed.

Mr Johnston said demand for Lifeline Canberra services are extremely high with all funds going to increase the supply of frontline support services.

“Every dollar makes a difference and we encourage people to keep donating, particularly in the lead up to the end of the financial year. This year we have a donations leaderboard and it’s quite a tussle at the top with the winner declared on July 1st.”

Donations can be made online at www.wintersolsticeswim.com up until 30 June; all donations are tax deductible.
