War Memorial a ‘wonder’

The Australian War Memorial has been named as one of the seven ‘Wonders of Australia’.

Created by Experience Oz, an online poll asked Australians across the country to vote for their favourite Australian landmark from a shortlist of 50.

The Australian War Memorial was named alongside Uluru, Cradle Mountain, the 12 Apostles, Horizontal Falls, the Great Barrier Reef and the Sydney Opera House.

Director of the War Memorial Dr Brendan Nelson said the ranking is a tribute to the engaging, moving and educational way the War Memorial “tells the stories of Australians who have given all for their nation”.

Remembering victims of violence

The Zonta Canberra Breakfast Club and the Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin will combine to remember women killed this year in Australia due to domestic violence.

Sixty-three women have died so far this year (at the time of going to press) as a result of domestic and family violence.

The Canberra Rotary Peace Bell in Lennox Gardens will be struck 63 times, once for each victim, when the clubs combine on Monday 10 December. This day also happens to be the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Zonta Canberra Breakfast Club and the Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin invite all Canberrans to join them on Monday 10 December from 6pm at the Canberra Rotary Peace Bell in Lennox Gardens, to “send the loudest message possible against domestic violence to our city, Australia and the World”.
