Unlicensed driver arrested for car theft, other offences

ACT Policing arrested two people yesterday, 26 August after they allegedly stole a car, refused to pay for petrol and committed other offences across Canberra.

Police will allege a 26-year-old Hume man and a 28-year-old Richardson woman stole a blue Nissan Pulsar from a Bonython residence.

It will also be alleged they then drove away from a Hume service station without paying for fuel about 10.50am before committing a burglary at a Hackett residence about 11.30am.

About 12.23pm, the stolen vehicle was sighted by police in Fyshwick and followed to the Chisholm shopping centre, where the alleged offenders entered the shops.

ACT Policing officers, with the assistance of canine units, arrested the two people when they returned to the vehicle.

Police also determined the two people were in breach of the COVID-19 public health directions.

The man will face the ACT Magistrates Court today, 27 August, charged with two counts of driving a motor vehicle without consent, burglary, minor theft, making off without payment, two counts of unlicensed driving having never held a licence, and failing to comply with direction by Chief Medical Officer.

The woman will also face the ACT Magistrates Court today charged with two counts of riding a motor vehicle without consent, breach of Good Behaviour Obligations, trespass and failing to comply with direction by Chief Medical Officer.
