Two men arrested after weekend ram raid in Belconnen

Two men will face the ACT Magistrates Court today, Monday 30 August, regarding their alleged involvement in a ram raid at a Belconnen car yard early Saturday morning, 28 August.

Between 3am and 4am on Saturday, a car with two men was used to force entry via the rear fence of the car yard. A till containing cash and vehicle keys was taken from the premises and the men departed the scene.

A short time later, two men stole a Silver Nissan X-Trail from the car yard using one of the keys stolen earlier.

About 11.30pm police observed the stolen X-Trail speeding on Antill Street, Watson, with the headlights turned off. Police followed the vehicle towards the Federal Highway, and additional police vehicles responded to set up a perimeter.

ACT Policing deployed a tyre-deflation device in Aspinall Street, Watson, and the X-Trail came to a stop in Phillip Avenue, where police arrested two men and a woman who were in the vehicle about 11.35pm.

The woman, a 36-year-old from Kingston, was granted bail to appear in court in September on a charge of Unlawful Possession of Stolen Property.

The two men were held at the ACT Watch House to appear in court today.

A 28-year-old Charnwood man, who was on bail, will face charges of driving while disqualified, furious driving, failing to stop a motor vehicle for police, and driving a motor vehicle without consent.

A 31-year-old Holder man will face charges of riding a motor vehicle without consent, possessing a drug of dependence and possession of ammunition.

Police will oppose the granting of bail for the two men.
