The ‘world’s largest garage sale’

Over the weekend, Canberrans will be able to participate in the ‘world’s largest garage sale’, when the Garage Sale Trail returns for 2018.

The Garage Sale Trail is a nationwide weekend event that will see groups and individuals register their garage sale online, and encourage locals to ‘trail’ around to each of the sales in their area.

ACT NoWaste spokesperson Robbie Ladbrook said the Garage Sale Trail is an opportunity for individuals, schools and community groups to host their own sales or fundraising events.

“It is also an opportunity for bargain hunters to mark the date in their diary to trek around town and visit Garage Sale Trail sites,” Ms Ladbrook said.

“I encourage Canberrans to again get behind the Garage Sale Trail. It is more than just a great opportunity to stop some potential treasure from going to landfill, it is a chance to find some bargains and help reduce waste in the ACT.”

One such Canberran is Jean Thomson, who is preparing to downsize to a unit from her Yarralumla home. Jean is planning to sell some furniture, crockery, glassware, books, her vinyl record collection and around half of her collection of elephants.

“My father did a lot of travelling … he used to travel back and forth from Bangkok. It was probably started by my father giving me an elephant … most of them have been gifts,” Ms Thomson said.

“Every time anybody goes somewhere they always bring me back an elephant.”

Garage Sale Trail co-founder Daryl Nichols said the Garage Sale Trail is a way to meet your neighbours and participate in a grassroots community activity, all while decluttering, reducing waste by finding a home for preloved items and raising money for yourself or local causes.

“We ask sellers to name their sale which is a bit of fun and adds a little colour to their garage sale event,” Mr Nichols said.

“Some past examples include The Almost Deceased Estate, It’s a Divorce, Garage Sale of the Century and The Only Lionel Vinyl Sale.”

In 2017, over 100 sales were held in the ACT, with almost 5,000 sellers and shoppers involved over the weekend.

This year’s Garage Sale Trail will be held on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 October.
