Stromlo Leisure Centre construction completed

Molonglo residents can now count down the days until the Stromlo Leisure Centre is open for business, as construction on the building is officially completed today.

The $36 million facility will open on Saturday 15 August, when Canberrans will be welcomed to see the 50-metre pool, splash park, health club and creche.

ACT Sport and Recreation Minister Yvette Berry said she was looking forward to the Canberra community enjoying the state-of-the-art facility.

“The Stromlo Leisure Centre offers the community another place for family and friends to come together and aquatic programs to keep Canberrans active and safe in the water,” she said.

“Importantly, the centre will provide ongoing employment opportunities with more than 80 jobs created to operate the centre.

“More than 80 local and interstate contractors and over 1,100 individuals were contracted for the construction of the Stromlo Leisure Centre.”

Construction on the leisure centre began in 2018 and will join the mountain bike trails, criterium circuit, running track, and equestrian trails.

YMCA NSW will finalise preparations for the upcoming open day, and CEO Susannah Le Bron said foundation memberships to the centre have gone on sale to the public today, Friday 17 July.

“We are counting down the days to our August 15 opening and cannot wait to share this truly awesome facility with the ACT community,” Ms Le Bron said.

“We’ve already had more than 1,300 people express interest in joining the Y at Stromlo,” she said. “Access to the site will be limited to members and casuals with bookings in line with COVID-19 restrictions to ensure everyone can work out and connect in a safe way.”
