Community Services #1 helps seniors stay at home

Community Services #1 is a community based for purpose organisation serving the Canberra community for over 35 years.

They manage and deliver a range of community services to more than 500 seniors through their acclaimed aged care programs that offer affordable, high quality care.

Community Services #1 provides an array of services to support individuals aged 65 years and over in the community through their delivery of the Commonwealth Home Support Program and Home Care Packages.

For older people who prefer to stay independent in their own home, the Commonwealth Home Support Program offers entry level support services such as cleaning, laundry, personal care, meals and basic home maintenance. It also offers social support groups, transport and assistance with housing.

For those requiring higher levels of support or with more complex needs, a Home Care Package may be coordinated to provide personalised, ongoing support to help you keep your independence and lifestyle while continuing to live in your own home.

There are four levels of Home Care Packages, ranging from basic through to high level care needs, which are provided based on an assessment of an individual’s needs. Call the highly experienced team on 1800 960 938 to find out more.

Something for everyone at Warrigal Stirling

A Q&A with GM of Warrigal Stirling, Kim Bradshaw.

What is Warrigal’s philosophy in caring for our senior citizens?

Our purpose is to support older people to have great lives. We do this by creating communities and offering services so that older people can be independent, respected, happy and connected.

Our Philosophy of Choice enables older people to have the opportunity to be themselves and be independent, respected, happy and connected, and to not only make choices, but good choices.

What features of Warrigal Stirling make it so attractive?

So many of our residents, families and visitors say they feel Stirling is like “walking into Home”. As they walk through the door, they relax, feel safe and enjoy the warm and friendly relationships they have made with the other residents, families and staff.

Our single room bedrooms with ensuites are an inviting, comforting size, and the many different lounge areas and outdoor spaces give plenty of space to spend time in and enjoy. The varied and regular activities are fun and inclusive for all residents. And with such delicious food on offer, our highly skilled physiotherapists keep everyone as mobile and flexible as possible. There is something for everyone.

Find your Happy Fit

The podiatrist-owned Happy Fit Footwear has something for everyone, especially those who have been searching for footwear that feels and looks good.

Happy Fit Footwear stocks a huge range of popular brands, such as Frankie 4, Rockport and Ziera, with orthotic-friendly options and a variety of sizes up to a women’s EU 46.

They’ve even got podiatrist-approved slippers so you can keep your feet in check while you kick back and relax at home – owner and podiatrist Jane Earl says her practice saw an influx of foot problems after last year’s lockdowns due to people not wearing the proper shoes at home.

Jane says while people with foot, knee and back problems will benefit from the Happy Fit range, it’s for anyone who’s looking for fabulous feet – both inside and out!

“Good footwear is for everyone.”

Have you considered your super in your Will?

According to Tanya Herbertson, Partner at Meyer Vandenberg, superannuation death benefit disputes are becoming more and more common.

“These days people are living longer, sometimes having multiple relationships and blended families,” she says. “Often the sums involved in superannuation death benefits are significant, particularly when there is also a life insurance component – so this is the driving motivation behind disputes.”

These disputes can be avoided, however, with comprehensive estate planning that incorporates superannuation benefits. “Establishing ‘dependence’ or ‘interdependence’ is often a crucial issue in these types of cases,” says Tanya. “That’s why you really need someone who understands the complexities in estate planning so that all your assets are distributed according to your wishes.”

Nurse Next Door is making lives better

Nurse Next Door doesn’t just provide in-home nursing and caregiving homecare services – they are “Making Lives Better” by honouring everyone’s right to stay in their own homes, on their own terms.

“People don’t seek out homecare because they’re thinking about healthcare,” says local Canberran couple Kylie and Darren Williams, who run the ACT division of Nurse Next Door. “They seek out homecare because they don’t want to lose their identity; the things and people that bring them the greatest joy and comfort.”

Underpinned by the principle that no one is exempt from the potential to make their lives better, Nurse Next Door operates under their trademarked Happier Ageing Philosophy.

Happier Ageing is about focusing on what you CANdo, not what you can’t.

If you want to find out more about how Nurse Next Door is Making Lives Better, the 24/7 Care Services team is here to take your call anytime.

Parkinsons ACT offers Occupational Therapy programs

Parkinson’s ACT Occupational Therapist, Kate Sterrenberg, says the local not-for-profit organisation offers “a robust, proactive and exciting program” of Parkinson’s-specific occupational therapy (OT), which is resonating with members.

Thanks to a grant from the John James Foundation funding Kate’s position, Parkinson’s ACT is now able to offer “high-level OT services and initiatives in the community”.

Programs include: a comprehensive two-hour OT assessment in the member’s own home to identify potential hazards and recommend enhancements; a virtual and face-to-face seminar series featuring experts in neuropsychology, speech pathology, nutrition, neurological physiotherapy, mindfulness and more; social events where members can develop peer support groups; Parkinson’s specific training programs with hospital and aged care staff; and members volunteering to help UC students build their knowledge of Parkinson’s.

People living with Parkinson’s disease in the ACT region, their carers, families and friends, are encouraged to join Parkinson’s ACT to access the full range of member benefits.

Last year, The Salvation Army Community Care expanded its Home Care services to Canberra where it is offering a range of services such as domestic assistance, clinical care, social support and more, to help older Canberrans live independently in their own homes and continue to be part of their communities.

Fiona Sanders, General Manager of Community Care, says she loves supporting people to age in a familiar environment and feeling like they still have control over how they live their life.
