Sam Kerr hailed as players’ Player of the Year

Australian football star Sam Kerr has been honoured for her remarkable season with another major award, voted by her fellow English soccer professionals as the women’s player of the year.

Kerr, already the Golden Boot winner as the Women’s Super League top scorer and voted player of the year by the Football Writers’ Association, was thrilled to learn on Thursday that she’d now been saluted by the Professional Footballers’ Association.

“It’s a massive honour I think, whenever you’re voted by your peers,” said Kerr, who was also voted into the team of the year along with three of her Chelsea teammates.

“I think that’s the highest honour as a player so, it’s an amazing feeling.”

Kerr scored 20 goals in the league to defend her Golden Boot title and was the star performer while inspiring Emma Hayes’ team to the domestic league and Women’s FA Cup double.

She scored two dazzling goals in the final league game of the season against Manchester United to shoot Chelsea to the title before grabbing another brace in the FA Cup final win over Manchester City.

She was voted ahead of her shortlisted Chelsea teammate Pernille Harder, the Arsenal pair of Vivianne Miedema  and Kim Little, and Manchester City duo Alex Greenwood and Lauren Hemp.

Meanwhile, Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah was voted winner of the equivalent PFA men’s award, while Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden retained the title of young player of the year.

City’s Hemp won the women’s young player of the year honour for a third consecutive season.

Salah topped the poll ahead of Belgian playmaker Kevin De Bruyne, who had won for the previous two years and again spearheaded the Manchester City team which claimed the Premier League title.

Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo and Tottenham striker Harry Kane had also made the shortlist, along with Salah’s Liverpool teammates Virgil Van Dijk and Sadio Mane.

Salah takes the PFA player of the year trophy for a second time, having previously won in 2018.
