Olympics COVID list grows with 16 new cases

Dutch tennis player Jean-Julien Rojer has tested positive for the coronavirus, putting him out of the Olympics as Games organisers announce 16 new COVID-19 cases linked to the sporting showpiece.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) announced Rojer’s test outcome, which also ends the Tokyo journey of his doubles partner Wesley Koolhof.

Tokyo organisers did not identify the 16 new cases on Monday but said they were not residents of Japan and three of them were athletes.

Rojer is the latest athlete in the Dutch delegation to test positive after rower Finn Florijn, taekwondo’s Reshmie Oogink and skateboarder Candy Jacobs.

The latest numbers bring the total of Olympics-related Covid-19 cases since July 1 to 148.

The Tokyo area is under a fourth coronavirus state of emergency for the duration of the Olympics.
