Nominate your 2022 ACT Multicultural Champions

ACT Minister for Multicultural Affairs Tara Cheyne is calling for the community to put forward nominations for the 2022 ACT Multicultural Awards.

These Awards recognise and celebrate the significant achievements and contributions of individuals and organisations across the ACT and Canberra region who have helped to create a thriving, welcoming and inclusive multicultural community.

There are four Award categories open for nominations:

1.         Multicultural Individual Champion – acknowledging outstanding efforts that have contributed to making Canberra a more welcoming community.

2.         Community Organisation (Multicultural Champion) – for social enterprises, businesses, public sector and educational services that have benefited the ACT multicultural community and contributed to strengthening social cohesion and participation.

3.         Outstanding Excellence Award for Diversity and Inclusion – recognising an individual or organisation in the community sector for their dedication to enhancing cultural diversity and promoting inclusion.

4.         Multicultural Arts, Media or Culture Award – for contribution to promoting multiculturalism in the ACT community through art, media or cultural activities.

“There are many in our community who are putting the needs, interests, and welfare of our diverse community at the heart of their initiatives, activities, and services who deserve to be nominated,” Ms Cheyne said.

“The Awards are not only an opportunity to recognise our multicultural champions, but serve to promote and celebrate cultural diversity in the ACT.”

Nominations open today and close at midday on Tuesday, 31 May.

More information about the awards, including about how to nominate, can be found online.

“Receiving the ACT Community Organisation (Multicultural Champion) Award last year was a real honour for all of us at Initiatives for Women In Need Incorporated (IWiN),” said Dr Madhumita Iyengar, Chair of the IWiN Executive Committee.

“It acknowledged the work we do in helping marginalised women from multicultural backgrounds who are impacted by issues like domestic and family violence, exclusion, and inequality, and encouraged us to keep working with our community, and bringing these to the attention of government.

“On behalf of IWiN, I thank the ACT Government for recognising our volunteers’ relentless efforts to create a support network for socially and economically disadvantaged women in ACT, while raising voices against the discrimination these women are facing at work and at home.

“There are many other organisations and individuals in our community who also deserve recognition, and I encourage everyone to please consider nominating them for the 2022 Multicultural Awards.”
