New mental health service to help Canberrans through pandemic

A new ‘Head to Health Pop Up’ service opens today, Monday 18 October, to support Canberrans’ mental health as local residents continue to struggle with the pandemic.

Capital Health Network (CHN), ACT’s Primary Health Network, have commissioned Think Psychology Solutions to facilitate the initiative until 30 June 2022, after receiving $1.6 million in funding from the federal government.

CHN CEO Megan Cahil said there’s no need for a referral or appointment, and the free service is there to guide Canberrans to find the right local support just for them.

The hubs will be staffed with psychologists, mental health workers and social workers, offering video and phone supported mental health and assessment services.

“The extra pressures of isolation, home schooling, loss of income and the uncertainty of the pandemic is taking its toll. Canberrans can simply call Head to Health Pop Up to discuss their concerns with a trained mental health professional,” Ms Cahil said.

“We’re very excited to be launching this service. The earlier people deal with mental health issues the better, and we encourage people to reach out and get the support they might need.”

She said they’ve seen many people who haven’t felt vulnerable or anxious before the pandemic started have begun reaching out, so she’s very happy to be providing additional support for Canberrans.

ACT Senator Zed Seselja said he welcomed the establishment of the service.

“I encourage anyone experiencing mental health issues to reach out and seek help. Mental health issues should be treated just like physical injuries, the earlier they are dealt with the better,” Senator Seselja said.

One of eight pilot Head to Health Adult Centres will commence in December in the ACT, and the CHN has commissioned Think Psychology Solutions to deliver the centre supported by $10.5 million of government funding through the ACT Primary Health Networks Program.

Clinical director of Think Psychology Solutions, Vanessa Hamilton, said they have the capacity and experience to run the program.

“As a large private multidisciplinary mental health provider in Canberra, we have the experience and capability to provide clinical assessment and interventions. We’re proud to be involved in this new service and will work with the local community to ensure Head to Health complements existing mental health services,” Ms Hamilton said.

COVID-safe face-to-face appointments will also be made available later in November. To access Head to Health, call 1800 595 212 or visit www.headtohealth.gov.au
