New high school and bigger primary school for Gungahlin

Taylor will have a new high school, while Margaret Hendry School will be expanded to another 600 students, Yvette Berry, ACT Minister for Education and Youth Affairs, announced today – a $118 million investment in Gungahlin education.

“Gungahlin continues to be one of the fastest growing regions in Australia, and we know that more and more families are choosing public schools for their children’s education in the ACT,” Ms Berry said. “This investment will make sure that every family has access to a great local public school.”

The new Taylor High school will open in 2024; built next to Margaret Hendry School in North Gungahlin, it will accommodate up to 800 high school students.

The high school will offer general and specialist learning areas, small group programs, a library, and an interactive learning centre. Sport and recreation spaces for students and the community will include a double gymnasium/hall, performing arts spaces, and hardcourts.

The design is inspired by the seasonal changes of the surrounding grassy woodland landscape – with views of Ngunnawal Country framed through sculptural forms and openings throughout the school.

Hindmarsh Construction Australia has been appointed head contractor for phase one of the new school.

Hindmarsh Construction will also be the head contractor for the expansion of Margaret Hendry School, which will accommodate up to 600 additional pre-school to Year 6 students next year.

The extension to the school’s administration building is already complete.

Margaret Hendry School’s new learning spaces will feature general learning settings, specialist learning settings including food technology, Science Technology Engineering Art and Maths (STEAM), and small group programs.
