Netball ACT names high-performance team leaders

Netball ACT’s high-performance teams The Capital Spirit have nominated its inaugural leadership group, just in time for start of season on 22 July.

The Opens team will be led by Keely Rodrigo as Captain and Tamara Weatherburn as Vice-Captain, while the U23s will be led by Emily Brady and Layla Bahgat as Captain and Vice-Captain.

Rodrigo, who has played her last two seasons with Canberra GIANTS and previously played with the Canberra Darters, said she was proud to lead the Opens team in its first season in the Netball NSW Origin Energy Premier League (NNSWPL).

“I am beyond grateful for the supportive team environment we have made with The Capital Spirit. Leading this group in our first season is so exciting for me,” she said.

“We’re all very grateful we can play some netball. Each team in the competition is as fast and physical as the next and I am confident that our preparation will ensure we make an impact on the competition in our first season.”

The NNSWPL will enter its fourth season in 2020, showcasing top-quality netball teams and players across NSW and now, the ACT.

Ten teams will compete in the 2020 season across both the Opens and U23s leagues, for 13 rounds prior to finals.

The grand final will be played on the weekend of 27 and 28 October.

The Capital Spirit Opens team will be led by international coach Kate Carpenter, who has previously coached at the Netball World Cup.

Brady and Bahgat said their focus would be on team connections and past playing experiences, coming into the U23s competition.
