Belconnen shooter on the loose, man wounded

A shooter remains on the loose after a 56-year-old man was taken to hospital with a single gunshot wound to the leg following a shooting in the underground carpark of a hotel in Belconnen this morning, ACT Policing reports.

About 9.30am, police were called to the underground carpark of a hotel in Chandler Street, Belconnen following reports of a man being shot.

A 56-year-old man was located by police with a single gunshot wound to the leg. He was subsequently transported to hospital by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.

Dozens of police personnel remained at the scene for hours and were joined by heavily armed tactical officers, sniffer dogs and plain clothes detectives.

An extensive search of the area has been conducted, however, at this time the person responsible for the shooting has not been located.

In a media statement this afternoon, ACT Policing said detectives from the ACT Criminal Investigations Team are following a number of lines of enquiry.

A source at the scene told Canberra Daily the suspect was described as a man in his 20s with scruffy hair dressed in black and wearing a white balaclava.

The source reported that police had cordoned off an area at Chandler Street near the Belconnen town centre.

Police are urging anyone with any information about this incident to come forward. They would especially like to speak with witnesses who saw anyone acting suspiciously in Chandler Street, Belconnen before or soon after 9.30am today.

Anyone with any information that could assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppers.com.au
