Mahomes dazzles, Eagles’ NFL Aussies soar

Patrick Mahomes threw for 337 yards and three touchdowns while running for another score to guide the Kansas City Chiefs back from a dismal first half against the Cleveland Browns for a 33-29 NFL victory.

The Chiefs rallied from a 22-10 halftime deficit at home to secure their fifth-straight win over Cleveland.

The Browns fell to 1-21 in season openers since returning to Cleveland in 1999, extending their NFL mark to 17 consecutive defeats.

Australian punter Arryn Siposs had a day out in his NFL debut for the Philadelphia Eagles in their 32-6 romp over the Atlanta Falcons.

The 28-year-old averaged 47.3 yards on four punts for his new team after making the switch from Detroit, who signed him last year but cut him before playing a game.

He wasn’t the only Aussie on the field for the dominant Eagles with left tackle Jordan Mailata celebrating his recently signed four-year deal, which could net him $112 million – with $57m guaranteed, inflicting his own punishment on the sorry Falcons.

In his first road game as a starter in a fully packed stadium there were some miscues but the 203cm, 160kg Mailata also provided a highlight moment when he levelled Richie Grant.

“Just doing my job. I had that play earlier in the week and the timing wasn’t right (in practice),” the Sydney-born produst said,

“When we called the play in the huddle, I knew what I had to correct. The timing had to be perfect.”

Meanwhile, Trevor Lawrence, this year’s top overall draft pick, threw for three touchdowns in the Jacksonville Jaguars’ 37-21 loss to the Texans in Houston.

Kyler Murray lived up to the pre-season hype as an MVP contender as he led the Arizona Cardinals to a 38-13 rout of the Tennessee Titans.

Russell Wilson threw three of his four touchdown passes in the first half to lead the Seattle Seahawks to a 28-16 win over the Indianapolis Colts while the Carolina Panthers beat the New York Jets 19-14.

Jameis Winston and the hurricane-displaced New Orleans Saints looked right at home in Florida against the Green Bay Packers with a 38-3 victory.

Matthew Stafford passed for three touchdowns in a dynamic debut with his new team, leading the Los Angeles Rams past the Chicago Bears 34-14.

Jimmy Garoppolo threw for 314 yards and a touchdown as the San Francisco 49ers beat the Detroit Lions 41-33 while Evan McPherson booted a 38-yard field goal in overtime for the Cincinnati Bengals to see off the Minnesota Vikings 27-24.

Teddy Bridgewater threw two touchdowns in his first start for Denver as the Broncos beat the New York Giants 27-13 while the Miami Dolphins edged the New England Patriots 17-16.

Elsewhere, the Pittsburgh Steelers emerged 23-16 winners over the Bills in Buffalo and Washington lost 20-16 to the Los Angeles Chargers.
