Learner driver crashes sister’s stolen car in Holt

A 20-year-old learner driver has faced court today, Thursday 17 March, for stealing her sister’s car, before crashing the vehicle into a power pole in Holt on Monday 14 March.   

About 6pm on Monday, Holt residents reported a vehicle that collided with a power pole at the intersection of Beaurepaire Crescent and Armstrong Street.   

ACT Policing conducted interviews with the 20-year-old learner driver and her mother and sister. The driver admitted to driving unaccompanied, without the permission of her sister, before crashing the vehicle.  

She was arrested on Wednesday 16 March in Belconnen and was charged with six offences:   

  • Taking a motor vehicle without consent  
  • Driving a stolen motor vehicle  
  • Using an unregistered or suspended vehicle  
  • Using an uninsured motor vehicle   
  • Being an unaccompanied Learner driver   
  • Negligent driving – other than death/injury  

Police believe witnesses spoke to the driver at the collision location.  

Anyone witnessed the collision or who spoke to the driver is urged to contact ACT Policing on 131 444, quoting reference 7058190. 

ACT Policing reminds Canberrans to exercise caution when driving on ACT roads and to obey the designated speed limits.
