Lawson duo charged with theft of over 1000 mail items

More than 1000 stolen mail items from the ACT and as far away as Batemans Bay NSW have been recovered after ACT Policing arrested two people in Lawson on Sunday 29 May.

A 29-year-old man and 16-year-old woman will each face 23 counts of mail theft and further charges are expected to be laid after police received calls regarding people allegedly attempting to break into mailboxes at residences in Lawson at about 7am on Sunday.

Soon after, police attended Stockman Avenue, Lawson and observed two people who matched the description provided by witnesses.

The duo ran from police and a short foot pursuit occurred prior to their apprehension. A nearby vehicle was identified as being linked to them.

Police were able to observe further items inside the vehicle possibly linked to other offences so it was seized and held while a search warrant was obtained.

On Tuesday 31 May, the search warrant was executed on the vehicle and more than 1000 items of mail were recovered including items addressed to locations in the ACT, Batemans Bay and other NSW locations.

They have each been charged with 23 counts of mail theft with further charges expected to be laid.

In a media statement, police thanked members of the public for their vigilance in identifying these offenders.

The statement said the community are the eyes and ears when it comes to many offences and with instances like this, it makes it easier to bring the perpetrators before court.
