Lake Burley Griffin fireworks to light up New Year’s Eve

After another challenging year of lockdowns, restrictions and border closures, the ACT Government is putting on free New Year’s Eve firework displays to say goodbye to 2021 and welcome in 2022 – while urging revellers to remain Covid-safe.

Events ACT suggests celebrating with a picnic at the lake with family and friends. Set up at your favourite spot and enjoy local artists providing roving entertainment from 6pm to 8.45pm, before the sky lights up with spectacular firework displays at 9pm and midnight.

The fireworks will launch from central, west and east basins so there will be plenty of room to spread out on the lake foreshore.

Or head to Black Mountain Nature Reserve, Mount Ainslie Nature Reserve and Red Hill Nature Reserve to take advantage of the panoramic views.

The government also urges Canberrans to support local businesses by buying a hamper or takeaway from your favourite café or restaurant to bring to the lake, or dine out in the city before heading down to see the fireworks. For those who want to celebrate in style, book one of the special NYE accommodation packages and enjoy a luxurious start to the new year. If the weather is looking unsettled on New Year’s Eve, check the Events ACT Facebook page and listen in to local commercial FM stations for event updates on the day.

The event is produced by Events ACT with Strategic Partners National Capital Authority and the City Renewal Authority.
