Moving day can be stressful and frantic – but you can make life a little easier for yourself with some proper planning. Here are 5 top tips to show you how to move house with less stress:

Label or colour code boxes with the room they belong in so you can start unpacking straight away at your new destination.

1 – Use what you’ve got

To transport household items, make use of the things you already own like suitcases, duffel bags and laundry baskets. Suitcases are ideal for packing heavy items as the handles and wheels will make for easy transportation. For dishware and other breakables, use blankets, pillow cases, towels or clothing to wrap your fragile belongings before putting them into boxes.

2 – Declutter as you go

While you’re packing, create four piles – keep, donate, sell and throw – this way you’ll be able to have a clear idea of what needs to be packed and what needs to be gone before moving day. If you’re downsizing and have a lot of furniture or bulky items to get rid of, organise a skip bin to make your life a little easier. Alternatively, consider selling the goods online or via a garage sale, or giving away through a Buy Nothing group or donating to charity (if in good quality).

3 – Organisation is key

By simply labelling or colour coding boxes with the room they belong in, you’ll be able to start unpacking straight away. Give each box a rating based on the priority it needs to be unpacked in.

4 – Keep essentials separate

Pack a box with all the essentials needed on your first night – think light bulbs, chargers, bed sheets, toiletries, towels, toilet paper and shampoo – so you can freshen up and hit the sack after a long day of moving.

5 – Don’t go it alone

The saying “many hands make light work” is definitely appropriate when it comes to moving from one place to another. However, while restrictions remain in place around social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic, we’re not able to call in friends to help out. So, we have to rely on immediate family who live in the household to each play a role, or pay professional removalists to do the heavy lifting for us – while maintaining a safe distance.
