High range drink driver arrested after early morning collision

A 40-year-old Harrison man has been charged with high range drink driving following a collision in Ngunnawal early this morning.

About 3.10am this morning, Tuesday 23 November, police were conducting mobile patrols on Burrumarra Avenue, Ngunnawal and saw a black Nissan Micra sedan stationary in the middle of the road about 100 metres west of the roundabout with Horse Park Drive.

Police observed the driver still in the vehicle which had extensive damage including a damaged roof, missing front bumper, smashed windscreen and airbags deployed.

Officers spoke with the driver who stated that he had been in a collision while driving to a residence in Casey. A search of the surrounding area resulted in a collision scene at the roundabout at Gungahlin Drive and Horse Park Drive being identified – about two kilometres from where police located the man in his vehicle.

The vehicle’s front bumper with number plate attached were located at the collision scene and it was confirmed that the defendant had collided with a light pole and a ‘Form One Lane’ sign before he continued driving in his badly damaged vehicle.

The driver underwent a breath screening test which was positive. He was taken into custody and conveyed to Gungahlin Police Station.

Soon after, the driver provided a sample of breath that was sufficient for analysis and the result was 0.272 grams of alcohol per 210 litres of breath – more than five times over the legal limit of 0.05.

The 40-year-old was served with an Immediate Suspension Notice, removing his right to drive. He will be issued a summons to appear in court at a later date.

Anyone with information that could assist police about this collision is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website. Please quote reference 6968279. Information can be provided anonymously.
