GIVIT donation of the week: Household furnishings and essentials

Domestic Violence service providers rely on GIVIT to urgently source donations for individuals/families who are moving into crisis accommodation, a new tenancy or long-term housing solution after escaping a violent or potentially violent living situation. Currently, there are over 250 urgent requests across the capital region to support individuals and families setting up a new life from scratch. Some of the donations needed include good quality beds, mattresses and bedding, electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets and laptops, warm winter clothing, grocery vouchers and children’s toys. To donate, visit givit.org.au/whats-needed, search by Appeal “Domestic & Family Violence”, location “ACT”. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant organisation to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off.

Gentle Yoga Classes in Tuggeranong

If you’re looking for something to help you de-stress, get you out of the house or just connect and socialise, then join Negar Ghasimi for her gentle yoga classes, held weekly on Fridays 10.45-11.45am at Tuggeranong Community Centre, 245 Cowlishaw Street, Greenway. Cost: $5 per class; no experience required; chairs will be available for those who prefer seated yoga. Bring your yoga mat, water bottle, blanket and cushion and experience the benefits of gentle yoga.

Hawker Mens Shed Repair Cafe

The repair café will be held at the Hawker Softball grounds, Walhollow Street, Hawker on Sunday 20 June 10.30am-1.30pm. Volunteer fixers teach repair techniques and help community members to save items such as toys, small wooden items, bicycles, small electrical appliances, garden equipment and clothing from landfill. The Andante Andante Choir will perform ABBA songs at 11.30am. Entry by gold coin donation.

Friends of Black Mountain Mid-Winter Talk

Friends of Black Mountain will host a mid-winter talk, ‘The Invertebrates of Black Mountain’, presented by local invertebrates expert Dr Kim Pullen on Tuesday 22 June 11am-12.30pm at Telstra Tower theatrette. About 2,150 species of insects, arachnids, millipedes and velvet worms have been recorded on Black Mountain, although scientists studying them estimate that there are more than 5,000 species of invertebrate in the reserve. The Greenway Probus Club is a mixed club which meets on the second Tuesday of each month 10.30am-12.30pm at Vikings Town Centre Club, Tuggeranong. A short formal meeting and morning tea is followed by a guest speaker or other social activities. Cost $6. A group of enthusiastic mini golfers will hold a meeting on Sunday 27 June 10am at the mini golf course at Federation Square, Gold Creek to discuss the formation of a club. All adults and children are welcome.
