Groovy, baby: 1970s pad in Cook sells for over $1 million

A seriously 1970s home in the Belconnen suburb of Cook has sold at a timed auction for over $1 million, “well above” vendor’s expectations.

49 Dwyer Street in Cook went under the virtual hammer on Friday 8 May, with the new owners placing a winning bid of $1,023,500 to secure the unique home.

Listing agent, Matt Sebbens of Blackshaw Belconnen, said the home was an “absolute standout in the Canberra market”.

The five-bedroom family home in Cook has space in spades.

“Because of its design, décor, and overall feel, it required an equally unique marketing and sales method to complement the uncommon market conditions we are currently experiencing,” he said.

The five-bedroom family home boasts a number of quirky features, including psychedelic wallpaper, retro bar area and a fireman’s pole to take you from the top to floor to the ground floor.

The kids can take themselves to bed at night … via the fireman’s pole, of course!

Sebbens received 143 enquiries about the property, and arranged for 37 private viewing appointments. He told Canberra Weekly in April the property has spent almost 50 years with the original owners, and accurately predicted that many a prospective buyer would “fall in love with this ‘70s masterpiece”.

The retro abode was the first Canberra property to be sold via a timed auction, held via national online platform AuctionNow. The auction commenced at 9am on Thursday 7 May, with the hammer falling at 4.52pm on Friday 8 May; the 32-hour auction saw 36 bids from nine registered bidders.

“Overall, we are pleased with the both the result and the process for our clients”, Sebbens said.

“Although a different concept for our local market, we feel that the process of a timed auction allowed those registered the space and privacy to make considered decisions, leading to a result I don’t believe we would have achieved through a traditional auction environment”.

The home was Allhomes’ most viewed listing for the month of April, racking up more than 14,000 hits.
