The GWS Giants will head to Western Australia in round one of the 2021 NAB AFLW season after the league updated the fixture due to current border restrictions.
The Giants will now take on the Fremantle Dockers in round one on Sunday 31 January at Fremantle Oval before taking on the West Coast Eagles in round two at Norwood Oval in Adelaide on Saturday 6 February.
Their round two matchup against the Eagles will nominally be a Giants home game however, the Giants will not lose the right to host five home games across NSW and the ACT, as previously determined prior to the updated fixture.
Only rounds one and two of the 2021 season have been announced, with the remaining rounds to come over the coming weeks.
After relocating to Albury on 1 January, the Giants moved to Adelaide last week where they will remain in a hub until at least the completion of round two.
Giants Head of Women’s Football Briana Harvey said the club was excited to get underway after a difficult start to the year.
“After a tumultuous past few weeks, we’re all excited to get the season underway,” Harvey said.
“We understand the changes to the fixture are necessary due to the current border situations and appreciate the AFL working with us to reduce additional travel considering we’ve been away from home for three weeks already and having relocated twice so far.
“Our players and staff have made enormous personal and professional sacrifices to ensure the season gets underway for the entire competition.
“We’re desperate to return home as soon as possible and be able to play in front of our home fans. in the meantime we’re looking forward to a strong start to the season against Fremantle.”
