Geocon has topped out its twin tower Grand Central development in Woden, with the concrete poured on level 26 of the tallest tower last week.
A joint venture between Geocon and another Canberra developer, Zapari, Grand Central will be home to 430 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments and penthouses that will, once completed, be home to around 1,500 residents.
Geocon managing director Nick Georgalis said the topping out of the development was one of the major construction milestones “circled on the calendar” for this year, and that buyers would be “thrilled” with the final product.
“The last 12 months have thrown a number of unique challenges at us, but through it all Geocon and Zapari have managed to keep this project on time and budget to deliver the highest quality for our customers,” he said.
“This project only has a handful of apartments left until it is completely sold out, which is a fair reflection of how the Canberra market has managed to push ahead of other Australian cities during the pandemic.”
Grand Central’s two towers will sit close to the planned CIT Woden campus, as well as a new public transport interchange on Callam Street, slated for construction to begin in 2022 and mid-next year respectively.
“This project will make life easier for people who live here,” Georgalis said.
“There is nowhere else in Canberra where you’ve got light rail officially planned and a large tertiary institution next door, as well as Westfield, and a major hospital just down the road.”
Zapari CEO Nick Skepev said 93% of the development has sold, a “testament to the detail and inventiveness the project has brought to the region”.
