Food for thought: Bar Rochford among best wine bars

Bar Rochford named among Australia’s best wine bars

The Wineslinger Awards have named their top 50 venues for 2020, with Canberra’s wine and cocktail bar, Bar Rochford, the only local watering hole to make the list. The awards were established in 2018 by ‘Young Gun of Wine’ founder, Rory Kent, to lead people to places where they can enjoy a glass of wine, and to celebrate creativity and excellence in the industry. The winners of this year’s trophies – the Wineslinger for the top spot, Best New Haunt, the Maverick and People’s Choice – will be announced on Monday 19 October. $1 for every People’s Choice vote will be donated to Tip Jar, a relief fund for the Australian hospitality industry.

From smoke-tainted grapes to gin

When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. But what about when life gives you smoke-tainted grapes? Well, according to Four Winds Vineyard, you make gin! The team at Murrumbateman-based Four Winds were among those having to do away with the year’s crop due to smoke-taint from the summer bushfires. Not wanting to leave tonnes of precious grapes “for the birds”, owner and CEO Sarah Collingwood said she looked into what else they could be used for. She contacted the team at the Canberra Distillery, and the Four Winds Vineyard handmade gin was born. The first batch is now ready to purchase, with floral, citrus, apple and juniper flavours that pair perfectly with tonic.

The Four Winds Vineyard handmade gin is available for $85 (700ml) at the cellar door, as well as Prohibition Bottle Shop, Kingston; Plonk, Fyshwick and Belconnen; Statesman Hotel, Curtin; Friendly Grocer, Chifley and Spence; and Canberra Wine and Spirit Merchants, City.
