Food for thought: New fantasy-themed restaurant

The latest in foodie news, events and products.

New fantasy-themed restaurant

Those who love cosplay, table top and board games, as well as everything ‘geeky’ in between are in for a treat come 6 December. Greenway, Tuggeranong will soon be home to a brand new fantasy-themed restaurant called The Copper Dragon (pictured).

Isobel Majewski, a former public servant who developed the idea of this themed tavern-style restaurant, wanted to share her love of fantasy, costuming and cosplay with others.

Initially the restaurant will serve classic pub food with a playful twist. The menu will boast such victuals as a ‘bag of holding’ (ploughman’s platter), ‘dire wedges’ (potato wedges) and ‘gelatinous cube’ (jelly inspired dessert).

Focusing on creating share platters, with the menu set to cater to both carnivores and herbivores, The Copper Dragon’s bar will also serve ‘ale’ (beer) on tap, as well as ‘potions’ (themed cocktails and mocktails).

Canberra’s best Aussie hams

As Christmas draws closer and festive foods line supermarket shelves, Meatways Butchery, Kambah, has been revealed as the maker of the ACT’s best hams.

The winners of the annual Australian PorkMark Ham Awards were announced on 26 November, revealing the best traditional bone-in and boneless hams made from 100% Australian pork.

Fleischmeister, Horst Schurger, and chefs Simon Bestley and Darren Smith assessed 155 hams from across the country, judging their appearance, taste and aroma. In Canberra, the Kambah butcher took top honours in both categories, with its boneless ham placing third nationally.

Yowie collectables

Yowie chocolate has released its mega World Wildlife Super Series to Australian collectors, featuring over 50 new toys to discover.

Hitting the shelves of major confectionery retailers this month, the new series includes six Yowie and a number of Grumkin from the popular book series, as well as their animal friends from all around the world, such as the Southern Elephant Seal and Tasmanian Devil.

Designed to be collected, swapped and shared with the aim of completing the entire series, this range is Yowie’s biggest to date, double the size of previous Yowie series.

The Yowie World Wildlife Super Series is available for a limited time at retailers such as Woolworths, Kmart and Big W.

Tasty Mexican addition

Mexican taqueria, Guzman y Gomez (GYG), has announced a new addition to its menu – ground beef. Made using fresh ingredients and a traditional Mexican recipe, passed down through the family of Guzman y Gomez head of menu innovation, Cindy Flores, it’s the result of 20 years being taste tested in the Flores family kitchen and is packed full of flavour and heritage.

The launch of the new menu item is the latest move in GYG’s mission to reinvent fast food for the 21st century, which has recently included new restaurant openings, launching a breakfast menu and continuing to progress its partnership with Project Wing, a drone delivery service.

To try the new addition, find your nearest GYG restaurant.
