Farmers market open this Saturday, closed next week due to Show

Following its closure last weekend due to major disruptions at EPIC, the Capital Region Farmers Market will be back open this Saturday 19 February before closing again next week due to the Royal Canberra Show.

“We are pleased that all your favourite farmers and producers are ready to go again this weekend, bringing Canberrans the best and freshest in local and region produce,” said Capital Region Farmers Market Manager, Sarah Power.

“It was a very challenging week last week, and the Market’s many stallholders are truly grateful for the incredible support of the Canberra community,” Ms Power said.

The decision was made to cancel last week’s Market on Saturday 12th due to disruptions from campers on the EPIC site, particularly in relation to safety concerns onsite and logistics for customers attending. It was a devastating result for the farmers, particularly after what has already been a very challenging two years due to droughts, bushfires, storms and the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The show of support from our visitors and all the kind messages we received last weekend were really appreciated, and we were very happy to see many people finding alternative ways to support their favourite stallholders, too,” she said.

Some stallholders relocated to the Murrumbateman markets on Saturday and there was a noticeable extra influx of stallholders and customers at the Southside Farmers Market at Canberra College in Phillip on the Sunday morning.

At this Saturday’s EPIC market, customers will find seasonal produce from across the region including new season apples and figs.

Customer access will be via Old Well Station Road into the Market’s usual carpark with pedestrian access via Gate 4 (service station entry).

“We would also like to remind our customers that the Market will be closed next Saturday 26th February for the Royal Canberra Show, but we will be back and full to the brim with fresh produce on the first weekend in March,” Ms Power said.
