Hardest hit suburbs receive extra green bin collections

Clean-up efforts are continuing after the wild weather in Belconnen on Monday 3 January, and to help lessen the load on residents, extra green bin collections will be directed to those most severely affected.

Deputy Director-General of Transport Canberra and City Services, Ben McHugh, said the additional green bin collections this Saturday 8 January in the hardest hit suburbs aim to ease the clean-up burden for Canberrans.

“Many of our crews have been working night and day since Monday with many even giving up their leave to return to work. We appreciate the community’s patience as crews respond as quickly as they can,” Mr McHugh said.

“We know that many residents have been doing the same in their yards and recognise that their efforts in clearing the green waste generated may mean their green waste bin is already full. We hope this additional collection will help residents in the clean-up process.”

This Saturday, additional green waste bin collections will be conducted in the suburbs of:

  • Charnwood
  • Dunlop
  • Florey
  • Hawker
  • Holt
  • Latham
  • Macgregor
  • Scullin
  • Weetangera

Green waste that can be collected in green waste bins consists of garden pruning, leaves, grass clippings, weeds and small branches that can be up to 45cm long and 10cm in diameter.

Canberra Sand and Gravel on Parkwood Road in Macgregor and Corkhill Bros at Mugga Lane Resource Management Centre in Symonston are accepting household green waste free of charge between 7.30am and 4.45pm daily.

Charges do apply for branches or trees over 20cm in diameter and/or 200cm in length at Corkhill Bros.

Mr McHugh asks Canberrans to continue to look out for their neighbours, particularly senior residents, and assist if they need help clearing their branches.

Visit www.act.gov.au/greenbins for more information and to register for a green bin with a one-off payment of $50 or free for concession holders.
