Canberra’s garbos will be getting a well-earned break this Christmas, which means bin collections of kerbside waste, recycling and green waste scheduled for Christmas Day, this Friday, will instead take place Boxing Day, Saturday 26 December.
The Christmas bin collection delay will impact the following Canberra suburbs: Acton, Ainslie, Barton, Braddon, Campbell, City, Deakin, Dickson, Downer, Forrest, Franklin, Fyshwick, Hughes, Griffith, Gungahlin, Hackett, Harrison, Kingston, Lyneham (South), Narrabundah, Oaks Estate, O’Connor, Pialligo, Red Hill, Reid, Throsby, Turner and Watson.
All other collection days, including Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, will be collected as per normal.
All ACT waste facilities will be closed on Christmas Day, Friday 25 December, including all businesses operating within the Resource Management Centres of Hume and Mitchell.
The Recycling Drop Off Centres, located at Jolly Street, Belconnen, O’Brien Place, Gungahlin, Baillieu Circuit, Mitchell, Botany Street, Phillip, and Scollay Street, Tuggeranong, are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week including Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
Just like your recycling bin at home, the Recycling Drop Off Centres accept steel and aluminium cans, paper, cardboard and rigid plastic containers for recycling only.
Polystyrene and soft plastics are not accepted; CCTV cameras operate on site 24 hours a day and fines apply for illegal dumping.
The ACT Container Deposit Scheme depots, located at various points across Canberra, will be closed on Christmas Day but are otherwise open from 9am to 4pm Monday to Saturday and from 9am to 3pm on Sundays and public holidays.
