Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad set to depart Raiders

Canberra Raiders fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad is set to leave the club at the end of the season and head back home to join the New Zealand Warriors for the 2023 season.

The Raiders have reportedly granted Nicoll-Klokstad a leave on compassionate grounds so he can be with his young family in New Zealand.

The 26-year-old has been with the Raiders since 2019, playing a crucial role in their grand final run in his first season and was fantastic again in 2020.

However, injuries over the last two seasons has stalled his progress, while young gun Xavier Savage has impressed in the No.1 jersey in recent weeks and is now the club’s clear fullback option moving forward. Although, the Raiders may yet go to market to strengthen the position, with recent reports in England linking them to Hull FC’s Jake Connor.

Nicoll-Klokstad began his career with the Warriors, playing two games for them in 2017 before heading to Canberra where he has played 73 games and scored 30 tries.

“He’s (Nicoll-Klokstad) has been very good for the club both on and off the field and we wish him all the best for the rest of this season before he returns home to New Zealand to be closer to his family next year,” Canberra chief executive Don Furner said.

Meanwhile, the Brisbane Broncos are reportedly poised to land gun Warriors’ fullback Reece Walsh, who is set to return to the Broncos barely a year after leaving Red Hill.

The young star requested a release from the Warriors on Tuesday and has been given permission to negotiate with only the Broncos as part of that release, according to News Corp.

Walsh, 19, is contracted with the Warriors for 2023 and has an option for 2024, having been granted an early release from Brisbane in April 2021.

He’s also been repeatedly linked with a move to the Dolphins, as the NRL’s newest club remains desperate for a marquee signing.

Walsh has played 30 games with the Warriors since he debuted for them last season.
