Car fires see 70 residents evacuated, one taken to hospital

Update 11.41am: ACT Fire & Rescue has left the scene of the car fires at Howie Court, Belconnen. Approximately 70 residents were evacuated from the building and most have been allowed to return, except for once residence which was affected by the car fires. ACT Policing remained on site conducting investigations. The community has been asked to take care when travelling through the area.

One patient was transported to hospital in a stable condition following multiple car fires at a unit block in Belconnen that saw residents evacuated early this morning, Sunday 14 March, Emergency Services Agency (ESA) ACT has reported.

ACT Policing said that about 6.45am, emergency services were called to a block of units in Disney Court, Belconnen following reports of several vehicles on fire in a ground level carport. ESA reported the scene of the car fires as a carport in a complex at Howie Court, Belconnen.

Three cars were located alight and ACT Fire and Rescue (ACTF& R)extinguished the fires. Specialists are assessing the units for structural and smoke damage.

Residents of the units were evacuated with all occupants accounted for.

ACTF&R were conducting atmospheric monitoring of the building and crews were remaining on scene conducting follow-up operations and asked the broader Canberra community to avoid the area until clear.

ACT Policing has begun an investigation into the circumstances of the fires.
