Supporting women in STEM, empowering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women to prevent domestic violence, and a mini-music festival highlighting female-identifying musicians – the recipients of the 2022 Great Ydeas Small Grants program are leading change in the Canberra community.
YWCA Canberra CEO Frances Crimmins said she has been “blown away” once again by the diversity and excellence across the program’s applications.
“Each year we’re always astounded to see just how many incredible women, girls, and non-binary people in Canberra have innovated ideas for their community, and a passion for creating change,” Ms Crimmins said.
“The recipients for this year’s Great Ydeas Grants are a testimony to the talent pool of compassionate advocates, creative thinkers, and entrepreneurs we have in our community.”
Reflecting on the breadth of projects being funded this year, Ms Crimmins said she’s thrilled to be collaborating with such a wide range of wonderful partners.
“We’re excited to fund projects such as Yurwan Bulan from Deborah Martin, which will empower and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women to prevent and respond to domestic and family violence; or Kellyanne Rosalion’s Auslan Playground, which will bring together D/deaf parents and families and carers of D/deaf children for a social playground to build community and social networks,” she said.
“They show how the whole community can benefit when we support and empower women and non-binary people to explore their great ideas.”
As part of the Great Ydeas Small Grants program, YWCA each year allocates $10,000 in micro grants to women, girls, and non-binary people within the Canberra region.
This year, Beyond Bank, Sustineo, Canberra Innovation Network, and the Joyful Business Club each sponsored an additional grant, raising the total funding pool for recipients to $16,000.
The grants aim to give people the leg-up they need to pursue their passions, alongside improving the Canberra community.
