Canberra COVID cases rise to 18

The ACT has recorded 18 new COVID cases overnight, the highest number in Canberra since Saturday 23 October, two weeks ago.

The new infections bring the total number of cases for the current outbreak to 1,716, while there are 136 active cases in the Territory.

Two people remain in hospital with or due to the virus, one in intensive care and requiring ventilation.

The ACT is also nearing the 95 per cent fully vaccinated milestone, with 94.4 per cent of the eligible population aged 12 years and over now double dosed.

There were 1,123 negative test results, down almost 800 on the previous day.

The news comes a day after the ACT recorded its eleventh coronavirus-related death of the outbreak, a man in his 40s.

Meanwhile, Australia has just ticked over the 80 per cent fully vaccinated threshold for people aged 16 and over.
