National Opera launches second season

After a successful first year, National Opera, Canberra’s very own company, opens its second season with one of Puccini’s most beautiful but lesser-known works.

La Rondine (Canberra Theatre Centre, March) tells the bittersweet story of a courtesan who falls genuinely in love. The production stars Lauren Fagan (returning to Australia from Europe) and Henry Choo (one of Australia’s finest tenors). Director Gale Edwards’ timeless modernisation brings the audience on the heroine’s journey of self-discovery; it is a lesson in stylistic beauty and elegance of what opera could be in the 21st century. Two swallows may not make a summer, but Puccini’s ‘Swallow’ is sure to make your autumn.

In June, National Opera’s artistic director Peter Coleman-Wright will direct Mozart’s Così fan tutte (Albert Hall, June), a problem play about love, illusion, and deception, in which two young men disguise themselves to test their fiancées’ faithfulness. The condensed ‘Pocket Opera’ production is in English, and will feature a cast of Canberra locals.

Black Friday offer: $175 for a ticket to both productions (save $20); visit www.nationalopera.org.au
