This gorgeous book about Australia will make for a great Christmas present.  Australia: A Photographic Journey, is a large, premium quality, hard cover, coffee table book that is full of fantastic photographs of Australia’s landscape and countryside. Twelve Caesars by Mary Beard

Princeton University Press, $49.99

Also containing many lavish photographs and illustrations is Twelve Caesars by popular, respected historian Mary Beard. In her usual lucid manner, Beard tells an enthralling story of how images of Roman emperors have influenced art, culture, and the representation of power for more than 2,000 years. Even today political figures are caricatured as modern Julius Caesars being stabbed in the back or as hapless Neros fiddling while Rome burns. Drawing on a wealth of research, and a multitude of paintings and sculptures, Beard explores the importance of portraits in Roman politics and provides interesting insights into famous pieces of art. A fascinating book.

The Best Cat, The Est Cat by Libby Hathorn

State Library of NSW, $24.95

Libby Hathorn’s The Best Cat, The Est Cat is a lovely children’s book that also serves as an appealing guide to some of the extraordinary items held by the State Library of New South Wales. Featuring a mysterious talking cat who takes two children on a fun adventure through the Library, the book will entertain and inform young readers. Lovingly illustrated by Rosie Handley, The Best Cat, The Est Cat has ghosts, treasures, and a touch of history, and is a delight to read to children. There are also interesting details on some of the items the children encounter. A terrific picture book.
