Book talk: 3 exciting and intense novels

Artifact Space by Miles Cameron

Gollancz, $32.99

Far in the future, orphan Marca Nbaro uses forged credentials to join the crew of the greatship Athens to escape her terrible past. Created to transport vast quantities of trade goods across the stars to obtain a rare alien material, the greatships are an essential part of humanity’s survival. However, a mysterious group is targeting the greatships, and the Athens is next in their crosshairs.

Artifact Space is an engrossing science fiction novel that follows a complex and damaged protagonist on a thrilling adventure. With an impressive narrative and a distinctive setting, this is a captivating and highly recommended read.

Small Acts of Defiance by Michelle Wright

Allen & Unwin, $29.99

As WWII begins, Australian teenager Lucie and her mother, Yvonne, are forced to journey to Paris to live with Yvonne’s brother. Caught up in the German invasion of France, Lucie and her family attempt to survive under the new regime. Unable to bear the treatment being meted out by the Germans, Lucie prepares to defy the Nazis, no matter the consequences. In her debut novel, Australian author Michelle Wright has written a clever tale of survival and rebellion as this powerful historical drama presents a harrowing depiction of life in occupied Paris. Tense, moving and memorable, this is a great debut.

Protector by Conn Iggulden

Michael Joseph, $32.99

Following the battle of Thermopylae, the Persian army reigns supreme and Athens burns. As the city’s citizens find refuge nearby, their fate hangs in the hand of some of Athens’ greatest thinkers and strategists. As war ravages all of Greece, these important figures will lead the country against the armies of Persia at the bloody battlefield of Plataea. Following on from his epic 2020 novel, The Gates of Athens, Iggulden continues his Athenian series with Protector. This latest book highlights two of the most important conflicts in Athens’ history, in a fantastic and detailed narrative. An excellent read.
