Bin collection days to change in 17 ACT suburbs: are you affected?

Bin collection days in 17 Canberra suburbs – from Taylor in the north to Isabella Plains in the south – are set to change from Monday 13 June. Read on to find out if the changes affect you.

According to an ACT Government media statement, the changes will better integrate new ACT suburbs and improve the coordination of routes for collection vehicles. They address the ACT’s current and future growth, as well as the operational impact of the FOGO pilot in Belconnen on red bin collection services.

Six suburbs will move to a new bin collection day and 10 suburbs will swap their recycling and green waste collection weeks.

Charnwood will have a collection period spread over four days, to service the suburb’s narrow cul-de-sacs and ‘keyhole’ style streets. This will allow smaller vehicles to be used in Charnwood, which is safer and more effective than servicing narrow streets with the larger vehicles used in other Canberra suburbs.

To help Canberrans adjust to the changes, additional recycling collection days have been allocated to some suburbs to ensure there isn’t a long gap between recycling collection services.

Suburbs swapping collection weeks for green waste and recycling are asked to put out all three bins on the first week to help with the change.

Changes to collections by region are:

Belconnen

  • Aranda – swap recycling and green waste collection weeks
  • Evatt (north of Clancy Street) – bin day moves to Thursday
  • Charnwood – bin collection day split into four separate collection days for different areas of the suburb
  • Scullin – swap recycling and green waste collection weeks

Central Canberra

  • Dickson – swap recycling and green waste collection weeks
  • Downer – swap recycling and green waste collection weeks

Gungahlin

  • Forde – bin day moves to Friday
  • Taylor – swap recycling and green waste collection weeks

 Woden, Weston and Molonglo Valley

  • Curtin – swap recycling and green waste collection weeks
  • Hughes – bin day moves to Tuesday
  • Lyons – swap recycling and green waste collection weeks
  • Phillip and Swinger Hill – change of bin collection day from Tuesday to Monday

Tuggeranong

  • Chisholm – swap recycling and green waste collection weeks

Charnwood changes

The ACT Government is working with Charnwood residents on changes to their bin day by placing a sticker on the landfill (rubbish) bin. All Charnwood households will also receive a letter with details and a map which demonstrates how the suburb is divided for collection days.
