‘Bake a change’ with RSPCA’s Cupcake Day

It’s that time of year again: time to don an apron and get baking for a good cause for the RSPCA’s annual Cupcake Day.

RSPCA Cupcake Day is an opportunity to raise funds for animals in need through the RSPCA’s shelter operations, emergency medical care, inspectorate operations and education programs.

RSPCA Cupcake Day Ambassador, Canberra’s own dessert queen and Zumbo’s Just Desserts runner-up Ali King, says she was honoured to be asked to be a part of Cupcake Day.

“I have worked alongside the RSPCA for many years and am so passionate about what they do that when I was asked to be the ambassador again this year I couldn’t say no!

“The RSPCA receives very little government funding so the only way they can continue to do the amazing work they do is through the generosity of the public,” she says.

“It gives me an opportunity to give back to a local organisation. It also happens to combine two of my greatest loves – animals and desserts!”

Ali and the RSPCA are urging everyone to get involved in the day by registering to host a Cupcake Day, baking cupcakes to sell, or by purchasing cupcakes and making donations.

RSPCA ACT says every single cupcake makes a difference; 12 cupcakes can provide an orphaned kitten with a bed, litter tray and toy, and 25 cupcakes can provide a week’s worth of antibiotics for an animal recovering from surgery.

“You’re helping us wrap their wounds, clean their kennels and provide expert behavioural training to some of our most heartbreaking cases. Essentially, you’re helping us create second chances.”

Cupcake Day is one of the RSPCA’s biggest fundraisers, and this year they are aiming to raise $100,000. It costs $25 per day to provide care to each animal while they are at the shelter.

Ali says you don’t have to be a “master baker” to host a Cupcake Day gathering.

“Purchase some of your favourite treats from your local shops or even delegate the cooking to those people who love to bake. Cupcake Day is about taking some time out to have some fun with your friends, family or co-workers to enjoy some yummy treats and raise some much needed money for a great cause,” she says.

While RSPCA Cupcake Day will be officially held on Monday 20 August, you can hold a Cupcake Day anytime during the month of August.
