ACT to test mobile detection camera on Majura Parkway

The ACT Government is testing a mobile device detection camera on Majura Parkway from today 2 February for up to eight weeks. No fines or warning notices will be issued during the test period.

“Mobile device detection cameras are designed to detect when someone is using their mobile device, such as a phone, tablet or smartwatch, while driving,” said Deputy Director-General Transport Canberra and City Services Ben McHugh.

“The test is being conducted to ensure the technology works in the ACT road environment and is one of the steps in the current ongoing procurement process.

“The risks of using a mobile device while driving are significant. Research shows that drivers who text, browse or email on a mobile device while driving are 10 times more likely to crash. Driving while using your mobile device is as dangerous as drink driving, yet every day too many Canberrans put themselves and others at risk by doing it.”

Mr McHugh said large variable message signs have been installed at the test camera site to inform the public.

The test will be conducted in accordance with strict requirements to ensure that images generated through the trial are properly managed and protected.

This testing is part of ACT Government’s ongoing procurement process for a suite of mobile device detection cameras which can be deployed across the city. This procurement process will be finalised in coming months.

“When mobile device detection cameras are installed at sites across Canberra later this year, there will be a three-month grace period to assist with driver education. We will also be undertaking a further advertising campaign,” Mr McHugh said.
