ACT sportsgrounds to close for two weeks

All ACT Government irrigated sportsgrounds will be closed from Thursday 18 March to Wednesday 31 March 2021 for the autumn renovations that follow the summer sports season.

This maintenance period is carried out twice yearly at the beginning and end of the summer sport season.

Executive Branch Manager City Presentation, Stephen Alegria, said the work will ensure the ovals stay healthy for winter.

“To ensure sportsgrounds remain in good condition for the winter period, we undertake these maintenance works to assist the many different sporting groups and individuals that use our ovals,” said Alegria.

The renovation works for the winter sports include installing goal posts as well as applying fertiliser to assist turf growth and density, aeration, top dressing of worn and uneven areas as well as over-sowing of bare or sparse areas to even the turf cover.

“We are fortunate to have a close-knit sporting community in Canberra,” Alegria said.

“I would like to thank all sportsground users for their patience while we undertake these essential works to our sportsgrounds which will help to keep them in good shape.”

The ACT Government manages 127 irrigated sportsground sites across the Territory, with 882 individual hireable sporting fields hosting year-round training and competitions.

ACT sportsgrounds will reopen on 1 April 2021. Click here for more information on ACT Government sportsgrounds.
