ACT road toll reaches eight after single-vehicle collision in Melba

A second fatality in 24 hours has seen the ACT road toll for 2022 reach eight after a single-vehicle collision on Kingsford Smith Drive, Melba.

About 5.25pm Friday 20 May, ACT Policing received reports of the incident.

ACT Road Policing officers, ACT Ambulance Service paramedics and ACT Fire & Rescue firefighters attended the scene, and upon arrival confirmed the driver of the car was deceased, and the passenger had sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Initial investigations revealed that the car, which had been travelling southbound, had crossed the median strip, and the northbound carriageway, before colliding with a tree. The driver appears to have died upon impact.

ACT Road Policing’s Major Crash Team is conducting a full investigation into the collision, and anyone who witnessed the collision or captured dash-cam footage of it is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website.  Quote reference number P2075325.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

It is the second road death this week after a 20-year-old man died following a head-on collision on Hindmarsh Drive near O’Malley overnight on Thursday 19 May.
