ACT records seventh road fatality for 2021

A 92-year-old Yarralumla man whose vehicle collided with a tree on Hopetoun Circuit, Yarralumla around 1pm Thursday 22 July has become the seventh person to die on ACT roads this year.

ACT Policing, the ACT Ambulance Service and ACT Fire & Rescue attended the collision last Thursday.

The driver was taken to hospital with significant injuries, but was unable to recover from his injuries and died in hospital on Saturday 24 July.

ACT Policing’s Major Collision Team is investigating the circumstances of the incident, and a report will be prepared for the ACT Coroner. Hopetoun Circuit was closed for several hours on Thursday while investigations were carried out. Police would like to thank motorists for their patience during that time.

This is the seventh death recorded on ACT’s roads this year.

Police seeking witnesses to stolen vehicles

Meanwhile, ACT Policing is investigating two incidents in which a man was assaulted and vehicles stolen on Sunday morning, 25 July. 

About 6.30am yesterday, a 39-year-old Chifley man was assaulted in his garage when he disturbed two men he believed were attempting to steal his vehicle. The man sustained significant injuries to his face and hand and was transported to hospital.

About 7.05am, a 69-year-old Palmerston man was approached and threatened by a man in his driveway, and his vehicle, a blue VW Golf with ACT registration YLR73F, was stolen. The man was not injured in this incident.

A dark coloured Audi sedan, believed to be involved in both the Chifley and Palmerston incidents, was later found by police burnt-out in Crace. Police believe this vehicle was stolen from a business premises in Mitchell in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Anyone who saw the Audi or the VW Golf in the areas of Chifley, Palmerston or Crace yesterday morning, or has any information is urged to contact police.
