ACT records one new COVID death, 1508 cases

The ACT has recorded its first COVID death in over a month, along with a new daily high of 1,508 cases.

The death is a man in his 80s and takes Canberra’s COVID-19 death toll to 16. It is the first virus-related death in the ACT since 8 December.

Patients in hospital with the virus has risen by three to 28. Four people are still in intensive care with three requiring ventilation.

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Canberra has jumped to 6,302 while the total infections during the Canberra outbreak is up to 14,756.

24.3 per cent of ACT residents aged 18 and over have received a booster shot while the ‘fully vaccinated’ rate remains at 98.5 per cent.

4,436 negative PCR tests were returned in the past 24 hours.

The 1,508 cases eclipsed Canberra’s previous daily high of 1,305 recorded on Saturday 8 January.

Meanwhile, A dedicated walk-in clinic for COVID-19 positive patients opened in Garran on Monday – and as COVID-19 case numbers rise in the ACT, there will be an increased need for such a service, Canberra Health Services (CHS) say.

Set up to provide in-person support, advice, and interventions for people who have tested positive, the clinic also treats non-life-threatening injuries or illnesses unrelated to a COVID diagnosis, such as cuts and abrasions, strains and sprains, bites and stings, and infections and wounds.

The clinic operates from the northern end of the COVID-19 Surge Centre on Garran Oval; the testing clinic at the southern end is separate.
