Canberra’s Dr Sue Packer AM has been named as the 2019 Senior Australian of the Year, for her work as a paediatrician advocating for the rights of children in the healthcare system and wider community.

Dr Packer has been involved in the National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, championed the importance of early childhood environments for the developing brain and was a driving force for the creation of child-friendly spaces in hospitals. Dr Packer also lectures internationally and volunteers on a number of boards to improve the health and wellbeing of children.

Chair of the National Australia Day Council, Danielle Roche OAM congratulated the 2019 award recipients at a ceremony in Canberra on Friday night 25 January, and said Dr Packer is a lifetime advocate for the health, safety and rights of all children.

“Her dedication to protecting young lives has brought about practical change in treating children and has directly improved the lives of untold children,” she said.
