7 tips to calm the clutter and organise your home this new year

The New Year. A fresh start. The perfect opportunity to kick things off with a good old tidy!

Up your decluttering game and get some next-level organisation satisfaction with these tips from Becca Stern, co-founder and creative director of stylish storage brand, Mustard Made.

  1. Quick fix tidy trick – When you just need a quick fix to help you start getting organised, give yourself an instant lift by clearing off and tidying up the surfaces around your home. Just simply clearing off your benches will instantly help your space feel less cluttered and more calm.
  • 2. As you tidy and organise your space create a clean and special spot for each item to live. Utilise jars, boxes or baskets to help you thoughtfully and purposefully create a specific home for different things, rather than just swiping everything indiscriminately into ‘that drawer’ (you know the drawer I mean, we all have one!). Not only does this help keep your home more organised, making it easier to find everything, it helps create a sense of appreciation and value for the things you already own.
  • 3. Functional storage is about making your life easier and more organised. Once you’ve given each item its special home, make sure you can remember where you put everything with labels. Whether it’s the pantry, your craft cupboard or the linen press, save yourself the trouble of trying to remember which item is which with clear (and cute) labels.
  • 4. We all know how good it feels to have everything organised, but you can give yourself next-level organisation satisfaction by storing things in a way that is pretty as well as practical. One of my favourite ways to do this is to organise things by colour. For example, I like to colour-coordinate my wardrobe; it makes it feel more ordered as well as looking lovely and aesthetically pleasing. And if you really want to have fun with it you can also colour match your hangers to your clothes.
  • 5. Sort through anything that is out of season and store it away to create more space and ease of access in your wardrobe.
  • 6. Any storage solution you invest in needs to be flexible and adaptable to your needs; you want to make sure you get as much usable storage real estate as possible! Look for adjustable shelves, extra hanging space, hooks, anything that will help you to utilise the space effectively.
  • 7. Utilise the extra space on top and underneath your storage cupboard or locker by using baskets or boxes to give you that extra bit of storage space.
