Season so far

GWS Giants 14th â€“ 86.6% | 776 points for | 896 points against | 3 wins 7 losses | WLLWL

The Giants are having a tough season so far and find themselves with just three wins as we approach the halfway mark of the season.

They did manage to get a win in Mark McVeigh’s first game as head coach, thumping lowly West Coast by 52 points.

The Giants dominated the first half before the game turned into a shootout in the second half which probably wouldn’t have pleased McVeigh all that much.

The win might give them some confidence heading into this week, but GWS will need to improve significantly on that performance if they are to beat the Lions in Brisbane.

Brisbane Lions 2nd â€“ 143% | 1065 points for | 745 points against | 8 wins 2 losses | LWWWW

The Lions had won five straight matches before last week’s five-point loss to Hawthorn in Tasmania.

Despite copping a loss, the Lions still played well in most aspects of the game. However, their backline had tremendous difficulty stopping the Hawks from scoring, with Hawthorn kicking 18 goals from just 50 inside 50s.

The Lions would be pretty filthy about dropping a game outside the top 8 and should be looking to bounce back at home.

Last 5 meetings and Gabba

  • 2021 round 11 – Lions 19.15 (129) defeated Giants 10.5 (65) at Gabba
  • 2020 round 7 â€“ Giants 10.8 (61) lost to Lions 13.10 (88) at Giants Stadium
  • 2019 Semi Final â€“ Lions 11.14 (80) lost to Giants 12.11 (83) at The Gabba
  • 2019 round 16 â€“ Giants 11.8 (74) lost to Lions 14.10 (94) at Giants Stadium
  • 2018 round 14 â€“ Lions 12.10 (82) lost to Giants 16.13 (109) at The Gabba

Both sides have been competitive over recent seasons with the Lions holding a slight 3-2 edge over the last five meetings and have won the last two straight.

Brisbane thumped GWS to the tune of 64 points in their only meeting last year. It was the Lions biggest win over the Giants since their first ever match against each other in 2012 which ended 19.18 (132) to 5.10 (40).

They have met at the Gabba eight times since 2012, with the Giants holding a 5-3 edge over the Lions. GWS had won five straight against Brisbane at the Gabba before last year’s result.

Pre match prediction

Hungry Lions bounce back: The Lions hit back after last week’s loss, kicking 20 goals in a big win.

Other match details

Both sides will be wearing their 2022 Indigenous jerseys once again as part of Sir Doug Nicholls Round.

The GWS jersey is designed by NSW artist Peter Whitton, a proud Wiradjuri man who lives in Western Sydney. The design is called ‘Together We Stand’ and represents all of those within the Giants family coming together to stand tall.

The match will be shown live on Channel 7 in the ACT and NSW from 1.30pm. It will be on Foxtel nationally and is also available to stream on Kayo.
